Cloud Over Campsite
Israel had the destination but not the itinerary.
God was taking them to the promised land. This much they knew. But every stop along the way was hidden by God—plotted and prepared from a higher realm.
What was Israel’s call? To follow the cloud.
The cloud of God’s presence told them when to stay and when to go. When the cloud moved, Israel followed. When the cloud settled, Israel stayed (Numbers 9:17).
In Israel’s brief shining era before a generation of wandering, they maintained a holy flexibility—the readiness to trust in and respond to the unpredictable movement of God.
In our desire for stability and control, it is natural to bind ourselves to timelines, short or long, according to our preferences.
Yes, God—I will take that assignment, but only for a year.
Thank you, Lord, for finally leading me here. At last, I can plant my roots for good.
But if heaven is our citizenship, every earthly stop is a campsite.
It is in Christ alone where we find permanent residence. And he alone determines the term of every worldly tent.
Watch against the plans and vows that tie you to the campsite instead of the cloud.
How can you know where the cloud will go?
You can have control, or you can follow the cloud.
You can have your preference, or you can have his presence.
Little is gained in the habit of spiritual meteorology: our futile attempt to forecast the times and seasons God has prepared for us. What pleases the Father is a heart ready at all times to respond to his voice.
Above all, stick to God, and he will make known when to stick to the plan.
