Cast the Smallest Burden

Why do we wait to cast off our burdens until they’ve already crushed us?

Because we think that God pays no attention to the earthly worries that weigh us down. In our mind, it is only once our problems pass into the realm of “spiritual matters” that the Father cares.

David had a different approach. What kinds of issues did he bring to the Lord?

Restlessness (v. 2).

Complaints (v. 2).

Oppression (v. 3).

Grudges (v. 3).

Anxiety (v. 4).

Fear of death (v. 4-5).

Feeling trapped (vv. 6-8).

Gossip (v. 12).

Loss (v. 14).

Betrayal (vv. 20-21).

David considered all of these significant enough to send off to God.

If it weighs on your heart, it weighs on God’s. And the Father wants to take it all—big and small.

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22)

God is not bothered by your burden. Because he cares for you, he is bothered when you try to carry it alone.

We don’t relay our troubles to God in prayer because, deep down, we hear him saying, “Get over it,” when he’s actually saying, “Give me it.”

From the moment the weight falls on your shoulders, you have God’s attention (for he was never distracted). He was ready to take the burden long before you recognized that you needed to give it to him.

Don’t wait. Take every trouble to Jesus as soon as it touches your soul. “In everything by prayer and supplication … let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).
