In this guide, you'll learn why God cares about your decisions, how to seek his guidance, and how to make a Spirit-led decision. You can read it on your own, or you can study it with community using the group guide.
In this chapter, we walk you through the problems with making decisions based on presumption or paralysis. We show you the power and biblical basis of the Freedom Framework, which is formed around three convictions:
‣ God cares about your directional decisions.
‣ God is able to speak clearly into your directional decisions.
‣ You are free to make a decision in the Spirit.
The remainder of the book walks you through five gifts (or resources) that God gives you for making decisions. You can use these gifts to make a decision freely behind the leading of the Holy Spirit.
1. Word: Has God already spoken?
2. Prayer: Have you asked God about it?
3. Prophecy: What is the Spirit speaking?
4. Counsel: What are God’s people seeing?
5. Desires: What do you want to do?
First consult God’s Word. If the Bible speaks to your decision, your next step is to obey what God says.
Before moving forward in any directional decision, pause and consider: Have you really asked God about it?
God’s prophetic voice to you and others is an indispensable gift for making decisions behind the Holy Spirit. Prophecy is the act of speaking words from God’s Spirit to God’s people under the testing of God’s Word.
In most cases, you should open the door for wise counselors before making your final decision. Ask people who are marked by three qualities:
1. They are marked by prophetic discernment.
2. They will actually bring the situation to prayer.
3. They will tell you what God says, not what you want to hear.
When the Spirit speaks the freedom to follow your desires, follow him freely into it—unless he checks.
Between paralysis (sweating over your sock choice) and presumption (kicking God out of the decision), there is a better way. Talk to God all the time and through everything.
We provide three weeks of gathering and discussion material so that you can learn how to make Spirit-led decisions together.
